The need for research at the university level is immense. A teacher should not only take classes but also devote himself to research work. Research is the catalyst that determines the quality of the university. AUB has a golden tradition of research. Here, international and national-level seminars are held. A bi-monthly and annual research journal is published. Recently, AUB has taken on an exceptional project to expand the field of research.
Under this project, research proposals were collected from all of the twelve departments of AUB. An expert panel led by the founder and founding vice-chancellor of AUB critically examined the feasibility, academic quality, depth and strength of the research proposal. Then, the panel selected at least one project from each department. The selected research projects will get funding from the Asian University of Bangladesh. After completion of the projects, papers with the research results will be published in renowned journals at home and abroad. Following are some of the ongoing research projects currently being conducted by different departments:
- An Empirical Study on the Socio-Economic Condition of Fishermen Communities of Ashulia, Savar, Dhaka, Conducted by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology
Summary: This empirical study by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the Asian University of Bangladesh examines the socio-economic challenges of fishermen communities in three villages near the Turag River in Ashulia, Savar, Dhaka (January–November 2024). Relying solely on fishing with no alternative income, these marginalized groups face severe deprivation, especially during off-seasons. Data collected via questionnaires revealed high occupational shifts due to barriers like limited resources and systemic marginalization. The analysis highlights the urgent need for policy interventions to address livelihood obstacles and improve socio-economic conditions. The study acknowledges support from the university and contributors involved in the research.
- Social development of the children of working mother in garments industry: An empirical study in Ashulia industrial city.
Summary: The proportion of women in the readymade garment industry has declined from 80% in 1980 to less than 50% in 2022, raising concerns about economic and empowerment impacts. This study examines how mothers' employment in the garment industry affects their children's social development, particularly the negative effects of maternal absence. Conducted in Dhaka’s Ashulia industrial area, the research will use both qualitative and quantitative methods, collecting data from 300 mothers and their children. Findings suggest that children of working mothers face socialization challenges, and the study recommends establishing more daycare centers to mitigate these issues.
Weekly Research Seminar:
A weekly research seminar is held every Wednesday, where a faculty member presents their research, updating the audience on its progress. Other faculty members and researchers engage in discussions, providing critical feedback for improvement. The session concludes with an intellectually stimulating Q&A, followed by the seminar chair’s closing remarks. So far, approximately 30 such seminars have been conducted, and the series is ongoing.
Monthly Research Seminar:
A monthly research seminar is organized at AUB, facilitated by the Social Science Institute, where important social issues are discussed. The seminar is presided over by Professor Dr. Abul Hasan M. Sadeq, Founder and Founding Vice-Chancellor of the Asian University of Bangladesh. Additionally, there are plans to publish two journals annually under the title Journal of Social Science Institute.
